Israel Hernandez Garcia Sr., age 80, of Van Horn, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026. He was born on December 16, 1945, to the late Edmundo and Erasma Hernandez Garcia.

Israel spent most of his life in Van Horn, where he was known for his warm heart, joyful spirit, and sense of humor. He loved singing, dancing, and riding horses, and he had a special gift for making people laugh. In his younger years, he enjoyed taming wild horses and played the accordion as a hobby before an accident in the early 1980s changed the course of his life. Even then, he continued to share his love of family, music, and storytelling with those around him.

Above all, Israel cherished his family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He took great pride in his only son, Israel Jr., and treasured the time he spent talking with and encouraging his beloved granddaughters. His love, wisdom, and humor will be remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his son, Israel Garcia Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Melissa Garcia; and his granddaughters, Ava Garcia and Alexa Garcia. He is also survived by his brother, Manuel Hernandez Garcia; his sisters, Dolores Guebarra and Rosalinda Hernandez; and Rosalinda's husband, Genaro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmundo and Erasma Garcia; his sisters, Virginia Gomez, Maria Silvas, and Elfida Ojeda; and his brothers, Braulio Garcia, Jose Garcia, and Manuel Garcia.

A Memorial Mass celebrating Israel's life will be officiated by Father Sergio Legarreta at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Van Horn on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The Rosary will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Mass at10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Van Horn Cemetery.
