Phillip Samuel Rose was born in El Paso, Texas on July 5th, 1957, to his proud parents, Farris, and Betty Rose. They brought him into their home in Sierra Blanca, Texas. The family later moved to Van Horn, Texas where Phillip attended the Van Horn School system. Phillip took part in normal school activities like track and football and boy Scouts.
After graduation he attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas where he was an honor student. His studies were in business and art. Phillip supported himself by becoming an entrepreneur. He used his artistic abilities to paint signs, and he created a window washing service.
He returned to Van Horn and continued his business of window washing and sign painting. By this time, he added painting portraits and caricature cartoons.
He was then called to study art at Sul Ross State University where he excelled in sculpture. Here he also studied Indian Lore and survival skills. He then went on to study art at community college, in El Paso, Texas where he studied under several acclaimed artists who were teaching at Community College. At this time, he continued his studies of world religions and martial arts.
He returned to live in Van Horn where he continued his business until his health kept him from working.
Phillip was a lifelong learner, artist and student of life and the ways of God, world religions and meditation. If you ever got the chance to talk to Phillip he would challenge you to look at things in a different way. He illustrated and hand copied in calligraphy the entire book of Matthew and has a collection of portraits of all twelve disciples which hung in the United Methodist Church in Van Horn. He loved the outdoors, hiking and looking for art in what he saw around him and contemplating life while taking long walks.
He was found in his home on June 27, 2023, attended by his beloved dog Cholo.
His father Farris Rose preceded him in death. He is survived by His mother, Betty Rose, age 96. Brother Billy and wife Dianna of El Paso, Brother Richard and friend, Yolie of Las Cruces, along with two nieces, four nephews, a great-niece and a great-nephew, his beloved dog Cholo and a supportive community that he had the privilege to live among in the town of Van Horn, Texas.
A memorial service for Phillip will be held sometime soon.
